This article was originally published in 2018 as the "13 Best Zombie Games of All Time," and then updated in 2019 to include 19 games. As we enter 2023, we've revisited and revamped our list, expanding it to 25 and crowning a new king of zombie games.

The original Plants vs. Zombies blended solid, approachable tower defense gameplay with whimsical charm, leading to its mass appeal on PC, consoles, and mobile. It found immediate success in its simplicity, and longevity in its well-crafted variety of plants and zombies. Its addictive, wave-based loop spawned a number of official follow-ups and countless imitators, making this family-friendly take on the undead worthy of a spot on our list.

How do you make your already successful open-world cowboy game even better? Release a reimagining of the western drama where all the characters you know and love now eat the flesh of the living! Undead Nightmare was pure zombie-blasting bliss with a healthy dose of supernatural armageddon to boot. Turns out John Marston was born to slay the undead and ride the horses of the apocalypse. Undead Nightmare set the gold standard for single-player DLC and, years later, remains a standout example of reimagined excellence.

Around the same time Treyarch was bringing Zombies into World at War, Valve introduced us all to their own cooperative take on battling the forces of undeath. Left 4 Dead pitted teams of four allies against mobs of zombies ruled by an invisible enemy: the innovative AI director, a carefully constructed protocol designed to dynamically influence the game as it unfolded. The result was a ridiculously replayable zombie shooter.

Just a year later, Valve brought us Left 4 Dead 2, building upon that successful formula with a familiar yet enhanced team-based shooter. Its gameplay tweaks, improved campaigns, new weaponry (including melee weapons), additional modes (Scavenge and Realism), and introduction of new zombie types (Jockey, Spitter, and Charger) make Left 4 Dead 2 one of the best co-op games of all time and nearly our pick for the best zombie game ever made.

Zombies are already bad on their own, but armed zombies are a nightmare come true. They now wander around, shooting randomly as their dead finger pulls the trigger, or their weapon hits something they stumble across. Talk about collateral damage!

Zombie Shooter 2 was developed and published by Russian developer Sigma-Team. It released in 2008 and it was the sequel to the zombie spin-off of Alien Shooter. While the game starts off promising, it soon turns into just the same as previous games, with a host of new issues.

The letter, in short, tells you that they are working for the Magma Corporation and that they are looking forward to seeing you. The journey there does not go according to plan. When you reach the outskirts of the city, the road is blocked off, and zombies are roaming the streets.

As for the general gameplay, it is still complete over the top mindless action. The main idea of the game is to slaughter tons of zombies. While starting off easy, the groups become bigger and tougher with each new level.

I am sure there are players out there who have finished Campaign, but for the average gamer, it would be impossible. For those returning to the series, they will instantly realize everything is exactly the same, except its zombies; and the levels for the survival modes are exact replicas of Alien Shooter 2, making them straight out boring.

Zombie Shooter 2 is a unique blend of two game genres - Action and RPG. Every player can choose a character to the liking, get experience to develop skills, earn money and spend it at weapons, medications and useful devices. All of this will be used against thousands of enemies. The zombies fill the game screen, never letting you rest, even for a minute.

Imagine yourself coming to visit an unknown city and seeing it almost ruined, with all the citizens turned into zombies. What will you do? Call for help, organize a large-scale rescue campaign or... Try to dig your way out of the situation, find out what happened and use your last chance to save the person you love!New project from the maker of the legendary Alien Shooter series.Huge crowds of enemies, more than 100 zombies on one map at a time.Ability to upgrade the main character's parameters.More than 60 weapon types, including sniper rifles.Lots of auxiliary devices, including radar and battle drones.Several types of vehicles to drive.Three game types: Campaign, Survive, Gun Stand.

This is an incomplete list of video games strongly featuring zombies. These games feature creatures inspired by the archetypal flesh-eating zombies seen in horror films, B-movies and literature; such as in the films of George A. Romero. Other variants, such as the faster running zombies, are also included.[1][2] Particular zombie rationale and depictions vary with the source.

Zombies are common or generic enemies in video games. The ZX Spectrum computer game Zombie Zombie, released in Europe in 1984, is considered to be the first video game focused on zombies.[1][3] Zombie games became more prevalent after the release of the survival horror game Resident Evil in 1996.[1] This release, coupled with the 1996 light gun shooter The House of the Dead, gave rise to "an international craze" for zombies, in turn impacting zombie films.[4] Resident Evil sold 2.75 million copies within the United States alone,[4] and its success resulted in it becoming a major horror franchise encompassing video games, novelizations, and films.[1] The House of the Dead is also credited with introducing fast running zombies, distinct from Romero's classic slow zombies.[5]

First-person shooter survival game, part of the Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Treyarch has confirmed that the Zombies mode will return for Black Ops II with new game modes. Its predecessors were Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops. This is the third time for the Zombies mode to appear in a Call of Duty game, and the first time to have game modes other than the traditional Survival mode. Treyarch has also confirmed that Zombies will run on the game's multiplayer engine, allowing for a deeper community experience, along with new features. A new 8 player co-op game called Grief is also supported, featuring 2 teams of 4 players competing to survive, unlike Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops, which only supported 4 player online co-op. As with the previous game, each map contains "Easter eggs" side quests, which is used to progress the story.

When zombie apocalypse VR game Arizona Sunshine came out for SteamVR and the Oculus Rift last year, it quickly became the game everyone name-checked when talking about good VR. The game went on to sell more than more than $1.4 million in first month after release. It also won the VR Game of the Year award from Upload VR. Now, the immersive shooter is headed to Sony's popular PlayStation VR headset on Tuesday, June 27th.

Developed by Jaywalker Interactive and published by Vertigo Games, Arizona Sunshine aims to put you directly into the action with both free-movement and teleportation navigation systems. You'll explore the post-apocalyptic southwest, searching for clues about other survivors and battling the monstrous undead along the way. You can also join up with a friend in co-op multiplayer or pull in three of your buddies to take on the endless Horde mode. The developers promise "next-level zombie mutilation," which isn't a phrase you hear every day, and a ton of realistic physics and particle effect systems. 041b061a72
